The Hearts of Oak duo Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and Richard Atta have earned a call to the senior national team Black Stars.
The two players have been appointed by coach CK Akonnor for the upcoming qualifying games for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A total of thirty (30) players were called up for the qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia in September.
Barnieh and Atta played a key role in Hearts of Oak’s double winner season. They were very influential when the Phobians won the Ghana Premier 2020/2021 after eleven (11) years of trophy drought. They also won the MTN FA Cup by beating Obuasi Ashgold 6-5 on penalties.
Other local players given a chance to play for the team include Asante Kotoko’s Abdul Ganyiu and Dreams FC’s Philemon Baffour. Surprisingly, Isshaku Fatawu has been called up by Steadfast FC regardless of whether his club is in the first division.
Richard Ofori from South Africa is also returning to the team after having been out for eleven (11) months due to injury.
Captain Andre Dede Ayew will lead the team against Ethiopia on September 3, 2021 at Cape Coast Stadium and then face South Africa on September 6 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
