It’s been 12 busy months for LeBron James. In October 2020, he led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA title, their fourth championship and NBA Finals MVP. Then, this July, the world finally got to see James’ film Space Jam: A New Legacy. And now, SpringHill Co., James and Maverick Carter’s entertainment company, has just sold a minority stake to several notable investors.
The investor group includes Nike, Epic Games (the creators of Fortnite), Redbird Capital Partners, and the Fenway Sports Group. The latter is the parent company of the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool, FC – the English Premier League club in which James is a partner. Carter also owns shares in the Fenway Sports Group.
While the stake size is unknown, SpringHill is reportedly valued at $ 725 million. James and Carter will continue to be the largest shareholders and will retain the overwhelming majority of the voting shares.
SpringHill Company was founded in 2020 through the merger of three existing companies: SpringHill Entertainment, The Robot Company and Uninterrupted. In addition to Space Jam: A New Legacy, SpringHill has created shows like The store on HBO and The wall on NBC.
This investment comes after summer rumors that James and Carter wanted to sell the company, either outright or for nearly three quarters of a billion dollars worth.
When the deal is closed, James is likely to earn more than $ 1 billion in career earnings. He has made $ 330 million in NBA salaries and nearly $ 400 million in out-of-court advertising and salary business. If he and Carter each keep a 40% stake in SpringHill, that deal will gross him $ 290 million. If you add it all up, he’ll crack the billion dollar mark.
He’s not finished either. This investment will open several new avenues for content, and let’s not forget that James is still playing at a high level in the NBA as well. It’s not unthinkable for him to add nearly $ 100 million – or more – in salary income before finally hanging up his sneakers.
Until then, we might even be preparing for James to break the $ 2 billion mark.
