Real Madrid suffer another defeat

Real Madrid suffered their first La Liga defeat of the season and are now three games without a win after losing 2-1 to a brilliant Espanyol in Barcelona.

The guests started stronger, dominated possession in midfield and looked sharp in attack. Karim Benzema tested his former Real teammate Diego Lopez with some early sifters.

But when Benzema and Co. attacked aggressively, they left gaps behind, and when Adri Embarba won the ball in midfield, he ran free into Real territory and forced a clever save from Thibaut Courtois.

And it was Embarba’s brilliant work on the right that put Espanyol in the lead. The winger ran free from Eduardo Camavinga before playing a brilliant cross for Raul de Tomas, whose clever contact at the front post went into the net.

The second half started like the first with Real under control, but again Espanyol took advantage of Real’s weak defense to double their lead.

Aleix Vidal picked up the ball in midfield, hurtling past an unlucky Nacho Fernandez before whipping the ball past Courtois in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Espanyol would have had time three moments later when De Tomas scored the goal, only to see his shot fly an inch past the post.

Real brought on Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic, who pushed for the equalizer. It was Talisman Benzema who gave Los Blancos hope by cutting inward before hitting home to pull one back for the guests.

Real moved up in numbers but were unable to level against a brilliantly organized defense and end a hot week in another loss after losing to Sheriff mid-week.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team remain leaders, but have to regroup during the international break and escape the slump.
