Social media was buzzing as the aspiring American rapper announced a pregnancy on some pregnancy photos.
Lil Nas X indicated that he expected it; not a baby, but his debut album Montero.
The rapper, who came out as gay, put an end to his fans’ anticipation when he showed his pregnancy in a video he posted on all of his social media platforms.
To celebrate the upcoming birth of his “baby” on September 17th, the 22-year-old musician did an exaggerated pregnancy shoot, complete with a bump and corolla.
Lil Nas X (born Montero Lamar Hill) exclusively tells PEOPLE that he got the idea for the shoot after hearing Megan Thee Stallion’s verses on his new song “Dolla Sign Slime” for the first time.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is amazing,’ so I called my stylist right away,” he says. “She said, ‘Wow, this all comes together. Your album. Your baby.’ I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s my baby, isn’t it?’ As a joke, she said, ‘Yeah, you should do a pregnancy shoot.’ “
“I was like, ‘You know what? It’s really brilliant, ‘”he continues. “So now we’ve got this whole thing coming out and it’s going to be amazing.”
The timing of the photos that are coming out couldn’t have been better either, as Lil Nas X just posted a parody of Drake on Instagram on Monday Certified lover boy Cover artwork with several emojis for pregnant women, the difference being that his facial features are pregnant men.
“I thought to myself, ‘There’s no way the universe is so perfectly set up for this to happen,” he says with a laugh.
When asked if the album was some kind of flawless conception, Lil Nas X replied: “I think I am both the father and the mother.”
“But I think the producers who worked on it are like the fathers too,” he says before thinking again: “Or maybe Uncle.”
Montero was mostly created in lockdown last year. The emergence of this new music, Lil Nas X said on Twitter last week, is “therapeutic”.
“I’ve changed in many ways,” he says now. “I’ve changed the way I deal with many situations, how I deal with sadness and anger, and just understand that I don’t have to react to emotions in a certain way. I can’t choose how I feel, but I can choose how to respond. I’ve learned to let people’s comments roll down my back. “
“The only person who really has to believe in me is myself,” he says. “There have been a lot of self-affirmations this year that I probably couldn’t have done two years ago.”
From the personal “Sun Goes Down” to the catchy “Industry Baby”, the songs on the new album represent Lil Nas X’s entire journey here, from “places I’ve been to places I want to visit”.
“You get a lot of stories about me,” he says. “You get a lot of stories about my past and where I want to be in my love life. But they’re also a bop. I feel like I’ve finally found a great balance to be as real as possible in my music and make a hit. “
In addition to the Megan Thee Stallion collaboration, Lil Nas X has worked with Elton John for “One of Me”, Miley Cyrus for “Am I Dreaming” and Doja Cat. teamed up for “Scoop” on the album, which also includes his previously released single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”.
Like all parents, he has many hopes and dreams for his “baby” along the way.
“I hope that every single corner of the world will be reached with this album,” he says before declaring: “It will happen!”
